Tips for Coping with Stress in Turbulent Times

                                 

We’re in the midst of turbulent times--not only do we seem to be awash in a never-ending stream of negative economic reports, but many of us are personally under intense financial pressure.

It is important to remember that when turbulent times cause stress levels to skyrocket, coping also needs to go way up.

The following tips will help you stay on top of stress, instead of allowing it to control you:

1.  Sleep tends to get disrupted during stressful times but being well rested enhances coping skills so make sure you get a sufficient amount of sleep.  Sleep issues should be treated aggressively during turbulent times. 


2. Now, more than ever, it's important to adhere to eating habits that deliver the nutrition your body critically needs.  That means no sugar binges, or outlandish starvation diets. 



3.  Exercise is a proven stress killer.  Try to get at least 30 minutes a day, six days a week.  Exercise is best when, like anything in life, you make it fun. Be creative, social, and mix it up.  Long workouts on the weekends can be great stress relievers. 



4.  Don’t use alcohol as a crutch, under the misconception that it aids relaxation.  Actually, alcohol interferes with desperately-needed deep-stage sleep.  Plus, alcohol tends to eclipse healthier, more effective coping techniques. 



5.  Seek out a sympathetic ear.  Yes, you're strong and self-reliant, but during turbulent times professional intervention may be worthwhile.  At the very least, trade notes with someone coping with a similar situation. 



6.  Delegate, delegate, delegate.  There’s no better time than the present to shed a weighty responsibility or two to someone capable of discharging it. 



7.  Don’t rely on reckless spending and sexual acting out as stress relievers.  The consequences of either only lead to additional stress.



8.  Don't neglect your physical health; stress takes a toll in many ways, so see your physician regularly.  


9.  Always bear in mind that this too shall pass.  No matter how uncomfortable and hopeless things may appear, economic prosperity will return.


10.  Learning to keep a positive attitude in life goes a long way when coping with stress.  Turbulent times create an opportunity for change and growth.  Use this time to read and learn how to use new strategies.
